First ‘Sense8′ Series Finale Featurette Celebrates the Fans & Teases the Cluster’s Last Adventure

As cult shows go, Sense8 is far more inviting than most. The central idea of the beloved Netflix series, that many disparate people can be part of a grouping called a “cluster,” stresses inclusion above nearly everything else, even as worldwide catastrophes and evil plots send them on adventures across the globe. For the Wachowski siblings, who created the series and wrote the entire first season alongside J. Michael Straczysnki, this has always been a major thematic obsession but Sense8 brings the idea of finding a supportive network (or a kind of proxy family) in others that may seem completely alien at first glance to the forefront.

That very feeling is stressed in the new Sense8 featurette, which teases what will be the elongated finale for the series. We get some glances at what to expect in terms of narrative, including some fight footage and a look at a chase scene being filmed, but more importantly, the adoration of the show’s fandom makes up the center of the quick teaser. The video is shorter than two minutes and much of that time is dedicated to the show’s main cast, from Daryl Hannah and Freema Agyeman to Max Riemelt and Brian J. Smith, talking about the love that the fanbase expresses wherever they go while shooting, including a stop off in Italy where fans packed the streets.

This is a bit of a cliche in marketing material like this but in the case of Sense8, it feels a bit more in line with why people have glommed onto the series. For me, the overall sense of inclusion was used as an excuse in several instances to not fully explore the characters as individuals. The series is often so enthralled by the idea of the similarities and universal feelings between people that it forgets that these characters are, in fact, singular people with singular issues and unknowable yet perceivable inner lives that are completely their own. That being said, few series have been so upfront and passionate about seeing beyond differences in the hopes of engendering equality, and that sadly continues to be a forge that needs to be reinforced by as many people as possible. The Sense8 finale airs sometime in 2018, and I doubt this problem will be alleviated by then.

In this special installment of Collider Kids, our weekly family-friendly article that puts the spotlight on content for our younger viewers, we talked with Ready Jet Go! creator Craig Bartlett (Hey Arnold!, Dinosaur Train) about the science-focused PBS Kids show and its upcoming holiday special. Ready Jet Go!: Holidays in Boxwood Terrace will launch on PBS KIDS this December 11th (check local listings). The merry and bright special will also be available to stream for free beginning that date on pbskids.org and the PBS KIDS Video App, and fans can check it out via the 24/7 PBS KIDS Channel as well.

In Holidays in Boxwood Terrace Jet is over the moon when his idea for the annual Boxwood Terrace Christmas Pageant is accepted – and he gets to direct the show, too! He casts Sean, Sydney, Mindy, and Sunspot as characters in the play, and also hires Mitchell Petersen to help him find that elusive, intangible thing called Christmas Spirit. Jet keeps searching for the Spirit of Christmas, and Sean and Sydney try hard to define it for him, while Mitchell really wants to belong to the group, but can’t quite figure out know how to fit in. But then, in a heartfelt conclusion, the kids get their answer about the true meaning of Christmas Spirit. Bartlett talks all about the special and more in our interview below:

For people who aren’t familiar with Ready Jet Go!, how would you describe it?

Craig Bartlett: I would say it’s a kids-first space show. It’s about an alien kid who comes to live in the neighborhood, so in the cul de sac you have this guy from outer space. They’re all really huge fans of the Earth; Jet and his parents, they think it’s the greatest. So kids who are watching, I hope they get an idea of how great the Earth is from watching Jet say how great it is. Basically, they keep going out into space and looking back at the Earth, and that’s my favorite message to kids: Once we see the Earth from space, we realize how precious it is.

How did Ready Jet Go! come about?

Bartlett: I have known Linda Simensky, who is the head [of children’s at PBS, I have known her since early Nicktoons. I worked on Rugrats and pitched on Hey Arnold! and Linda was an executive even then at Nickelodeon. She went to Cartoon Network and I followed her there and we tried to develop some stuff, and kind of an early version of Ready Jet Go! was something Linda and I were talking about back in those days. I said, “What about a show where this kid’s from outer space, but the gag is that the Earth-ies don’t really even notice?” So much of the humor of the show is how happily his little community accepts him. All of Boxwood Terrace is like a JPL. We are right next to Jet Propulsion Laboratories here in Pasadena, and I wanted it to be a tiny version of that in Washington state, a little community built up around, first, an observatory and now they’ve made it a science facility, a little Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Everybody in town works there. Jet couldn’t have come to a more perfect Earth location, because they love space and they think he’s neat. Their attitude would be like, “You know, I felt like an alien when I was a kid, too.”

What makes PBS the perfect place for Ready Jet Go?

Barlett: I had done Dinosaur Train with Linda, and I felt like we were really in sync. We made 89 episodes of Dinosaur Train now, and I realized, “I can do a science show!” All you have to do is make sure that the subject matter of your curriculum is something that you really love, and I really love dinosaurs and I really love space. It was an easy fit.

On continuing science education, especially about space:

Bartlett: I think the space piece is interesting because it really does represent that frontier of our ability to accomplish things. The things we do when we send probes out into space and navigate them around planets, bringing back the most beautiful photography that I can think of … The new pictures from Juno, of Jupiter’s surface, are perfect examples of that. And there’s something really impressive to me about the engineers and scientists who create those machines, and they get out there and perform these maneuvers that are all about amazing math … even though math isn’t even my thing, I still have this appreciation for how beautiful an endeavor that is.

I love that kids, just from watching a science show, they learn to be critical thinkers, they learn to apply things like the scientific method to problems, I just think that makes for more responsible citizens. They’ll grow up to be able to find the difference between fact and fiction, and just be investigative and ask questions, all that stuff. We try to model that in our characters.

Jet is, as an alien, just running around, super curious about everything; he’s not super-critical, he’s super-curious. That’s why there are several characters: Sean is the one going, “Wait, wait, wait, we have to be scientific about this.” And Sydney’s creative and using her imagination. And then Mindy, the fourth character, is just meant to represent real four-year-olds. [laughs] In Season 2, she turns 5. We had a running gag where once she turns 5 she can go to space, so we send her into space in Season 2.

On collaborating with real-world scientists like paleontologist Scott D. Sampson for Dinosaur Train and the JPL’s Dr. Amy Mainzer for Ready Jet Go!:

Bartlett: So great. On Dinosaur Train, we worked with Scott Sampson, who is a paleontologist who basically tells you what’s new in paleontology. Amy is that for us, too. Every time we sit down for a bunch of shows, we go, “Amy, what’s new in space?” She loves that things that they just discover wind up on the show. She calls it bleeding-edge science, where if they make a discovery about an asteroid, or discoveries about Pluto–both Amy and I are big fans of Pluto, we just like it because it’s small and cute, and of course got kicked out of the planets. We wanted to do a story, but we knew that it’s been three years since New Horizons went by. However, when we were writing our Pluto show, she said, “Wait, hold on. Let’s not really start that one until New Horizons goes by.” So we got all that information and put it right into the episode. That aspect of it’s really fun.

It’s the same with Dinosaur Train, too. Scott Sampson made a new discovery one summer, and in the fall, that was a character in the next episode. That stuff is really fun. They’re finding brand new stuff and we get to include it in our show. And Amy’s just incredible. She’s very creative, has a great sense of humor, and she shoots those live-action interstitials for us. Her day job is managing teams who look at space telescopes, and they’re tracking near-Earth objects and looking at the asteroid belt and that kind of stuff, and she says there’s a lot of running numbers in that job, so she loves to take a break and work on our show. She pours a ton of energy into advising us on all this science. It’s the best; I can’t think of anything cooler.

On making space and science accessible to everyone:

Bartlett: Amy’s personal story is that, as a kid, she became interested in astronomy. The people in her life who were authority figures basically encouraged her. She wants to be able to give that encouragement to little kids, especially girls. You have girls who, by the time they get of an age in science, it’s sort of becomes a boys’ thing and the girls drop out. She’s working on that. We’re working on that all together trying to model a real gender-balanced show where everybody loves space, and the girls and the boys, there’s no difference as far as their interest and thinking they can be scientists.

What can you tell us about “Holidays in Boxwood Terrace” special?

Bartlett: By the time we got to that one, that was at the end of our first two seasons worth of shows, so we were like, “Well, we have to do a Christmas special. That’ll be great!” It was fun to have done it that long. We’ve had several episodes where Jet kind of puts on a show. Truly, one of the foundations when I pitched it was that Jet is kind of a Music Man. Jet is this little alien kid but he’s kinda dancing around like the Music Man with his elbows out, marching around, and he’s always ready to burst into song. That aspect where Jet, he’s kind of irrepressible–you can’t keep him from starting a show–and by the time we’d gotten to the Christmas show, we had already done several of those. So the Christmas special is kind of meta. Jet’s like, “A Christmas pageant? What’s that? Great! Let’s go look at it!” He immediately goes downtown and finds Mr. Petersen, who’s one of the DSA guys, and he can’t wait to hand over the directorial reins to Jet; he’s been doing it for years and he’s exhausted. Jet comes in with a whole pitch sequence and Petersen can’t wait to give it to him. So now you have Jet, the alien kid, directing a Christmas pageant.

It’s such a runner that the Propulsion family basically takes words really literally and don’t really understand English that well, in a classic sci-fi comedy tradition. The aliens have always been that way. They’re particularly good-natured, our family of aliens is particularly sweet. They have a really short-term memory and the next day they’re ready to start all over again. They never lose their enthusiasm for this new planet.

All my favorite things about Jet, we put into the special. I got to write a bunch of songs. It was really important that the Christmas special have a story, and the story is that Jet gets to put on the pageant, but in order to put on the pageant, he has to find out what the spirit of Christmas is, and so he hires Mitchell–the loner kid who’s the detective who always spies on them–to help him find the spirit of Christmas. What you realize is, when Mitchell takes the job, is that as a loner he wishes he could fit in but doesn’t know how. Of course, the whole pageant is going to lead to a scene with a song about the spirit of Christmas being about letting someone in. “There’s someone out in the cold, let them in.” Mitchell gets to experience that and literally discover in real time that he’s being invited in.

On his hopes for “Holidays in Boxwood Terrace” becoming a holiday favorite:

Bartlett: I hope so. I really like that. I think that’s the nicest thing about the holiday shows. I totally hope it’ll be a perennial and that people will watch it. I hope that the show gets to go on so we can make more in the future.

What’s the future for Ready Jet Go?

Bartlett: A show like Ready Jet Go! could probably go on forever because that element of new discovery will always be there. I hope we can keep going. It’s always a challenge. If PBS considers it something that they can grow into a classic property, that would be fantastic. We are very hopeful, and ready, to do a Season 3 of Ready Jet Go!

Who are Rey’s parents? What has Luke been doing? Am I more obsessed with porgs or vulptices? Answers are on the way when Rian Johnson‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi drops on December 15, but those who attending the film’s world premiere have spoken up with the first public reactions to the film.

The latest chapter in the Skywalker saga brings back original trilogy stars Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher and Luke and Leia alongside the new generation of heroes and villains introduced in The Force Awakens, including Daisy Ridley‘s Rey, John Boyega‘s Finn, Oscar Isaac‘s Poe Dameron, and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. The Last Jedi also introduces some new characters to the franchise, including Laura Dern‘s resistance leader Vice Admiral Holdo and Benicio Del Toro‘s mysterious scoundrel DJ.

The Last Jedi finally arrives in theaters next week, but the lucky folks who attended the Hollywood premiere have already seen the film and while full reviews are under embargo until December 12th, early reactions have hit social media. Most of them seem to be pretty positive, while a couple are more tempered. Again, this is just an early first impression (and from folks who attended the world premiere no less) so there’s not a lot of detail or nuance here, but so far it sounds like Star Wars: The Last Jedi is indeed the goods.

First ‘Ready Player One’ Poster Teases a Massive Easter Egg Hunt

Warner Bros. has unveiled the first poster for Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated Ready Player One. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline and takes place in a dystopian future where humanity spends most of its time in the VR world of OASIS—which is basically a new internet, but in Virtual Reality. When the creator of OASIS died, he challenged the world to an Easter Egg hunt inside the OASIS, with the winner taking a fortune and control of the OASIS in perpetuity. Tye Sheridan plays a teenager who stumbles upon the first Easter Egg, leading to an intense race against time (and corporatism) to find the remaining clues.

This choice of project was a curious one for Spielberg as the source material is packed with 80s pop culture references to many films Spielberg either directed or produced. Moreover, the filmmaker hasn’t tackled a straight-up summer blockbuster since 2011’s The Adventures of Tintin (or, if you count that as a “family film”, since 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull). This film sees Spielberg making heavy use of CG and motion-capture technology with a packed cast, and that’s reason enough to be intrigued.

This poster strongly evokes Spielberg’s own E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial while also teasing the Easter Egg hunt in a big way. But the most curious aspect of the poster is the incredibly long length of our hero’s right leg. I can’t for the life of me figure out if this is intentional (i.e. “questioning reality”) or an oversight. If it’s the latter, that’s a pretty big screw-up.

Regardless, I’ll see every single Spielberg film in the theater with glee, so I’m mighty excited for this one. Knightfall
History’s medieval drama series “Knightfall” had the third-best cable drama launch of 2017, pulling in 1.8 million total viewers – behind only “Feud: Bette and Joan” and “The Son,” and tied with “Taboo”.

The series, set after the fall of the city of Acre, goes inside the medieval politics and warfare of the Knights Templar. The group was the most powerful, wealthy and mysterious military order of the Middle Ages and Tom Cullen plays a knight for the order sent out on a life or death mission to find the lost Cup of Christ. Stuber
Dave Bautista (“Guardians Of The Galaxy,” “Spectre,” “Blade Runner 2049”) is attached to star in the Tripper Clancy-penned comedy “Stuber” for 20th Century Fox. Michael Dowse is directing.

Bautista plays a very determined detective who commandeers an unsuspecting Uber driver named Stu into a harrowing evening of hijinks and mayhem. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley will produce. [Source: Deadline]

The Phantom Tollbooth
Matt Shakman has been set to direct the live action & CG animated adaptation of Norton Juster classic children’s book “The Phantom Tollbooth” for TriStar Pictures. Phil Johnston wrote the latest draft of the script, originally by Michael Vukadinovich, while Donald De Line and Ed McDonnell are producing.

The story follows Milo, an apathetic child who is bored by everything. When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through it and discovers the magical Lands Beyond – which is full of intriguing places and dynamic characters. [Source: THR]

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
Following that trailer earlier this week, writer-producer Colin Trevorrow has revealed on social media that despite all appearances, the trailer for “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” only shows events from the first hour of the film and doesn’t touch upon anything in the back half of the movie. Sandman
Anonymous Content has optioned the books by Alexandra and Alexander Ahndoril, better known by their pen name Lars Kepler, with plans for a film adaptation of “The Sandman” and a TV series adaptation of “The Hypnotist”. ‘Sandman’ follows Sweden’s most notorious serial killer and the two cops who try to beat him at his own game. Sony Pictures took the stage at Comic-Con Experience 2017 in Sao Paulo, Brazil earlier today, and while the panel served as the splashy debut for the first trailer for the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse movie, Sony also took a minute to tease the upcoming live-action Venom movie. While no footage or even an image was revealed, Director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) appeared live via satellite to fans to shed some light on what to expect, while Tom Hardy popped into frame at the end to surprise folks.

Hardy will be portraying the title character of the long-in-the-works adaptation at least partially using motion-capture, but as of right now that’s about all we know from the film. However, during his message Fleischer revealed the movie is primarily based on two comic book runs: Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes.

Venom: Lethal Protector is a six-issue comic book series by David Michelinie and Mark Bagley that was released in 1993. The story sees Venom and Peter Parker agreeing to leave each other alone as long as Venom doesn’t commit any more crimes, so Venom packs up and leaves NYC for San Francisco—indeed, Hardy revealed that this Venom movie takes place in San Francisco. In the comic arc, Venom ends up teaming up with Spider-Man to tackle five new offspring of the Venom Symbiote: Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony. But we know that this movie will not feature Spider-Man—at least not Tom Holland’s Spider-Man—so don’t expect a 100% comics adaptation.

Planet of the Symbiotes, meanwhile, was a five-issue comic arc written by Michelinie that was published in 1995 under the Amazing Spider-Man banner. That story found Earth invaded by an army of symbiotes with Venom teaming up with Spider-Man and Scarlet Spider to stop them.

So, taking into account that these two comics serve as the primary inspiration for the Venom movie, the story likely finds Venom newly adjusted to San Francisco living and battling an invasion of alien symbiotes of some sort, although it’s been rumored that Carnage is the primary villain, so he may also fit in there somewhere.

The Spider-Man of it all remains a mystery beyond the confirmation that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is definitely not an official part of this universe, but Into the Spider-Verse seems to be introducing the idea of a multi-verse, so it’s possible the Venom movie takes place in a dimension separate from the Spider-Man: Homecoming one, thereby sidestepping the issue of continuity.

New ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Featurette Reveals How the New Planets Were Created

Ahead of the world premiere tonight, Disney has released a brand new behind-the-scenes featurette for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The film was kept under lock and key throughout shooting, just as The Force Awakens was, but that didn’t prevent writer/director Rian Johnson from using real locations to bring the environments of The Last Jedi to life. This featurette highlights those locations and singles out how much of a difference it makes when filmmakers go out of their way to use real environments rather than try to craft everything on a soundstage and fill out the backgrounds with CG.

As you can see, Croatia stood in for the new hoity-toity planet Canto Bight, where Finn (John Boyega) and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) encounter new character DJ, while Bolivia brought the new planet Crait to life in stunning detail.

It’s a really fascinating if all-too-brief look at the hard work that went into making The Last Jedi a reality, and it’s pretty crazy they were able to shoot all of this stuff in real locations without too many leaks.

First ‘Jessica Jones’ Season 2 Trailer Reveals Premiere Date

The first Jessica Jones Season 2 trailer has arrived, heralding the return of Marvel’s best Netflix series. Moreover, while this initial trailer teases footage and a new story arc for Krysten Ritter’s hard-drinking titular character, it also reveals when you’ll be able to watch the new season: it premieres on March 8, 2018. While a Thursday launch date is atypical for Netflix shows, March 8, 2018 is International Women’s Day, so it appears the streaming service made an exception for a very deliberate launch date.

Melissa Rosenberg returns as executive producer and showrunner of Season 2, which finds Jessica attempting to put her life together after murdering David Tennant’s uber creepy Kilgrave. But a new case forces Jessica to dig deeper into her own past, something she’s not entirely psyched to do.

Season 1 was a terrific launch for the character and still marks the most compelling story from beginning to end of a Marvel Netflix thus. Daredevil may have the grit and The Punisher may have standout performances, but every other Marvel Netflix series suffers from trying to stretch out too little story for too long, resulting in lackluster pacing and narrative issues. Jessica Jones somehow sidestepped that problem (for the most part), and I’m incredibly excited to see what’s in store for the character in this new season.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and based on unbelievable true events, the darkly comedic I, Tonya tells the story of American figure skater Tonya Harding (Margot Robbie, in a truly stand-out performance and one of the best of 2017), who went from being the first American woman to complete a triple axel in competition to being a part of one of the most sensational and infamous scandals in sports history. Harding’s career as a skater was as challenging as her home life, and even though she had some major highs that made you want to root for her, she seemingly just couldn’t get out of her own way.  

At the film’s Los Angeles press day, Collider got the opportunity to sit down with actor Sebastian Stan (who gives a terrific performance as Harding’s mustachioed and impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly) to chat 1-on-1 about why he wanted to play this character, what he was most excited and most nervous about, the impression he got from meeting Jeff Gillooly, having Margot Robbie as a scene partner, and what it means to be a part of the awards conversation with this film. He also talked about how things are going on Avengers 4, the insanity of the 10-year anniversary party that took eight months to plan, and why he feels so blessed right now.

Collider:  When you read a script this good and a character that you know will be great to play, it must be so hard to not that still have to audition and not know whether you’ll get the role. 

SEBASTIAN STAN:  That’s a good question. I haven’t heard that one yet. Yeah, it is hard. You do get attached to it, absolutely. You recognize that it’s a good script, and if it’s a good script, you know you’re not the only one going after it. I’ve been in so many crazy experiences in my life. I was always moving, when I was a kid. When I look back, it’s hard for me not to feel that certain things just happen for a reason. I don’t know. I have no other explanation. After I had a Skype with Craig [Gillespie], I didn’t think I was gonna get this part because they were talking to a way bigger name, and it was gonna go that way. I only heard, three weeks after my Skype with him, that they were still interested in auditioning me. That’s when it started.  

Once you signed on for this role, what were you most excited about getting to do with this character and what were you most nervous about?  

STAN: There was a lot of nerves. Excited and nervous go hand in hand. Because it was a real person and a real incident, it seemed like there was a huge mountain of information to tackle. I had to really be a detective and go out there and find everything out, so that’s what I did for a month and a half. I scavaged the internet and I watched every single performance I could find of her skating, just to see if I could capture a glimpse of Jeff on the side ‘cause there was not a lot on him. I got as much as I could, and then I met with him, and that was helpful.  

Meeting Jeff Gillooly must have been weird. 

STAN:  It was very weird, only ‘cause I felt like I was living with him on my TV, and then suddenly he had materialized in front of me, except 25 years later. But it was important because I had to play him from 20 to 50, so I needed to see where he is, whether he regrets things, how he feels now, looking back, what he looks like now and whether he took care of himself. There were all of these questions.  

Did he express whether he feels like he’s a very different person now and that all of that is long behind him?

STAN:  I don’t know that he said that, but I know he felt very regretful about how things ended and about how things went down. He’s not a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve. He keeps things very close to himself. He’s very hard to read, in certain ways. I think it’s very sensitive for him to revisit that time.  

That’s probably not a time in his life he wants to relive, especially with a movie.  

STAN:  If you’re changing your name, yeah.  

The relationship between Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly is very intense and volatile, at times. What was it like to have Margot Robbie to go through this with? 

STAN:  I couldn’t have asked for a better scene partner. I really enjoyed working with her. I thought she brought out the best in me, and I like to think that we brought out the best in each other. There’s a great sense of trust there. I knew Margot was feeling good about just taking it to where it needed to go. If we needed to improvise somewhere, we could improvise. If we needed to turn up the volume on the violence, we could do that. If we needed to find the humor there, we could do that. It was a very open dialogue and a continuous communication between us, which was important.  

You’ve been in this business for awhile now. What’s it like to be a part of the awards conversation, regardless of the outcome?

STAN:  It’s very humbling, for sure. It’s great to be in the conversation, in the company of people like this. I don’t have anything to compare it to because I’ve never really been involved with a movie, to the extent that I am with this one. We’re happy because it was a joy to make. It was very difficult to make, but it was a joy because everybody got alone. The director, Craig, and all of us just really got along. Paul Hauser, who plays Shawn, and I are really good friends. Margot is great. Allison [Janney] would come in and either crap you up or scare you, in some way. The bird was amazing. It was a really good experience.

First ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Trailer Reveals Miles Morales’ Big-Screen Debut

The first trailer for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has arrived, following its premiere at the Comic-Con Experience in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The movie features Shameik Moore of Netflix’s The Get Down as the voice of Miles Morales, the young African-American man who takes up the mantle of Spider-Man in Brian Michael Bendis‘ run of comics. Mahershala Ali and Brian Tyree Henry will voice Aaron and Jefferson Davis, the thieving brothers who become crucial figures in Morales’ rise to become the beloved web-slinger. Liev Schreiber will voice the main villain of the movie, which is directed by Rodney RothmanPeter Ramsey, director of Rise of the Guardians, and Bob Perischetti, who wrote the latest adaptation of The Little Prince that Netflix released in 2016. Chris Miller and Phil Lord serve as producers, while only Lord has a screenwriting credit.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse looks much better than it ever needed to. The style and design that is on display in this short tease of the animated film is vibrant and immediately engaging on a visual level, showing a genuine sense of personality to the production. Story wise, there’s nothing here but the introduction of Morales (and what looks like the death of a beloved character) but that’s more than enough in this instance. Okay, there’s also the quickest of glances at what looks to be a caped villain in one shot. Regardless of the narrative implications, there’s a potent sense of gracefulness in this footage, something that already speaks well for what the creative team has been up to over the last year. In This Week in Animation News, I’ll take a look at the previous week in the world of animation in order to get you caught up on everything you might have missed. It’s your one-stop shop for news regarding cartoons, anime, and animated web series. We’re talking movies, TV shows, digital shorts, and everything in between!

While you should definitely be keeping an eye out for the first trailer from Sony’s animated Spider-Man movie dubbed Animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, here are some other news items to keep you busy in the meantime. Fans of Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken will be happy to hear that the award-winning series is returning for Season 9 this weekend and they’re kicking things off in a big way with a cookie-fueled and drug-slanted Christmas special.

In other TV news, Netflix has nabbed an animated series titled Twelve Forever from Julia Vickerman (The Powerpuff Girls). And TBS surprised everyone by dropping a new cartoon named Tarantula, which is available to stream in its entirety now (unless you want to wait and watch it traditionally as it rolls out on the network, which is totally chill, as well.) Blending media is Austin-based animation studio Mighty Coconut is set to rollout 57° North, an AR adventure game that’s driven by story and takes advantage of cutting edge technology.

In its third frame, Coco looks to be the winner once again, if Friday totals are any indication to weekend takes. Pixar and Disney’s latest blockbuster, which may also be Pixar’s best since WALL-E, has currently made about $121 million domestically, whereas its global total is hovering in the $172 million range. By the end of its run at the multiplexes across this nation, Coco will probably land in the same arena as Cars 3, Pixar’s other big release of the year, and will do so without the name recognition that the third Cars movie had going for it.

The Pixar movie has made enough money already to put some distance between itself and the closest competition on the board, most notably The Disaster Artist and Justice League. The former film, which expanded into 800 more theaters this weekend after its limited release last weekend, is currently in second with $2.6 million, bringing it’s total up to about $50,000 less than what Coco made on Friday in its third weekend of release. It’s also less than $100,000 ahead of Justice League, which has brought its domestic total up to $205 million. Though the movie’s global take of $576 million suggests that the reported $600 million price tag for the movie in total won’t be difficult to make-up, the fact that it’s still in peril of not clearing a sizable profit explains why the DCEU is getting an enormous retooling.

Outside of these competitors, the top five is pretty familiar. Wonder has been bumped down to number four, but will likely cross the $100 million mark domestically by the end of Sunday, following its $2.5 million take yesterday. Meanwhile, Thor: Ragnarok, one of Marvel’s most resilient box office colossuses, is holding on in the fifth spot with $2.5 million on Friday, adding a few more million to the movie’s $296 million domestic take. Taika Waititi‘s Marvel film will likely cross the $300 million mark domestically by weekend’s end, which is something we likely will never be able to say about Justice League.
